Joshua Trees- A Plant Life List Item
I have always wanted to see these plants. This latest trip made it possible. We found them in the extreme sw corner of Utah and just across the border in Arizona. We did not, however, find them in Nevada. But the area around Valley of Fire State Park is amazing for hiking!

Quick Trip to A Different Locale
Today was a really good day. Obsidian and I headed out to the Reservoir before we left town. When we arrived, we headed down to where the long-billed Dowitchers have been hanging about. As we approached the little mud flat the ducks and the dowitchers flew off. I hung around for a couple more minutes…

So Much Is Going On
I have been remiss. It has been months since I’ve posted. It is Tuesday, October 23, 2018 and we are at roughly 183 bird species for the year. However, it has also been a year of tremendous tumult and change. As a result very little has been recorded on this site. I hope to change…

50 Species in a Single Day
This morning I took Obi for a quick walk at the Fairgrounds. I was about to turn left and head out to the Lake, when I texted Erin to see if she was awake and would like to join me. She was and she did. So, we left Obi to have his second walk with…

Coast To Caldera
We left Brookings, Oregon at about 8 o’clock this morning. We drove to Crater Lake National Park, had a quick bite of lunch and got out and walked around on about 12 feet of snow. Didn’t stay long, as the walking was very difficult. We did see a Gray Jay, so that was a plus!…

Last Day at the Beach House
Spent the day walking on the beach. Nice day all around. We watched a Grey Whale swim around in front of our house for about an hour. Then a harbor seal showed up and watched the whale and us! It was a minus tide, so later we walked way out near where the whale was…

A Little Coastal Nature
What a nice day! First full day in Brookings, Oregon. We took the morning and went for a hike in Alfred Loeb Park- the Northern most Redwood grove in the country. These are not huge trees like those found in California, but they were pretty amazing. We did a nice little loop trail that was…

Final New Species for the Year
The Holiday break was a good one. We took a quick trip to Great Falls in hope of seeing a Yellow Billed Loon that had been hanging out near Giant Springs State Park. We knew we had a very short window of opportunity as there had been a decent amount of snow already and a…

Finally- A Cackling Goose
The morning pre-work walk started out rather dull. A few Rock Pigeons and the typical dozen or so Magpies were the extent of the observable birds. The midway point was better- an adult Northern Shrike allowed me to get within 30 feet or so. By the end of the walk, I was adjacent to the…

Snow Buntings On the Long Way Home
Today, I took the long way home, so to speak. Obi and I headed out at about 7:30am and we got back home about 11am. The Reservoir was simply alive with birds. Geese, Coots, Hooded Mergansers, Golden Eye’s, Buffleheads, two species of Grebe- Western and something a bit smaller with a white neck, at least…
