151 Bird Species For The Year
May 19, 2019 A good day. I saw a Black Crowned Night Heron- perhaps the one that has been haunting the Ponds. When I saw it, it was flying out of the Spring Meadow Resources pond towards Spring Meadow Lake. I watched it fly over the far end of the Lake and gave chase. No…

Snow In The Morning
Sunday, May 5, 2019Today started out cold and dreary. By the end of the day the sun had broken through and it was relatively nice. Obi and I took a number of short walks and on our last walk of the day, a lovely Townsend’s solitaire posed for us and we found a few harbingers…

The Light Is Lingering and the Ice Is Leaving
Dinner was early and easy- Bangers and Colecannon. As a result, we were totally done by a bit before 6pm. I had missed lunch entirely today, therefore I also missed taking Obsidian Black Dog on a midday walk. My step count was low and my dog was ready to go! So we struck out for…

Several Ramble-abouts
Over the course of several rambles about the valley, we ID’ed 44 species of birds before dinner. Several were new for the year. We went to the Lake WMA for about 90 mins and we saw 25 to 30 species from our lookout point.

Cedar Breaks – Almost
We drove up to see if the road to Cedar Breaks was open yet. Nope. But we got a glimpse of the grandeur. We had hoped to do a bit more walking than we were able to accomplish, but Obi injured his shoulder jumping off a decently high snowdrift. We packed it in and headed…

Joshua Trees- A Plant Life List Item
I have always wanted to see these plants. This latest trip made it possible. We found them in the extreme sw corner of Utah and just across the border in Arizona. We did not, however, find them in Nevada. But the area around Valley of Fire State Park is amazing for hiking!

Petroglyphs In The Parowan Gap
Southeastern Utah for a week with 4 people and a dog. Not everyone would think this is paradise. The Sienna is getting a little tight as the girls get older, but they are seasoned roadtrippers now that they are both in their teens. Obi doesn’t love long trips, but he will tolerate one long day…

Zion NP – Angel’s Landing
We met up with friends and hiked around in Zion NP today. Pretty spectacular. We walked the Pa’Rus trail along the Virgin River for a bit- just to stretch our legs and let Obi get some well deserved exercise. There was not a lot of bird activity in the park, but what we saw was…

Quick Trip to A Different Locale
Today was a really good day. Obsidian and I headed out to the Reservoir before we left town. When we arrived, we headed down to where the long-billed Dowitchers have been hanging about. As we approached the little mud flat the ducks and the dowitchers flew off. I hung around for a couple more minutes…

So Much Is Going On
I have been remiss. It has been months since I’ve posted. It is Tuesday, October 23, 2018 and we are at roughly 183 bird species for the year. However, it has also been a year of tremendous tumult and change. As a result very little has been recorded on this site. I hope to change…
