As usual, we took an evening walk in the hills with the Lab. This evening we decided to go up into the Rodney Ridge area. There’s a bit of water in a spot just off the parking area that Obi likes to use in August.
In addition to Obi, the water feature has a tendency to attract butterflies and birds- so what the heck. Obi wanted to start the walk with a quick dip in the wwater, so we went up the DeFord Universal Access Trail. Just past the water, we starteled up a Cooper’s Hawk who was hanging around to see what might drop by for dinner.
He was very close to us when he flew from his perch in a low shrubby area, and he only flew about 5 meters off and landed in a snag. After landing, he turned around and wathced us, and gave me enough time to get a few decent images.
We didn’t want to disturb him too much, in case we interrupted him during a meal, so we went on our way. You just never know what you’ll find in the hills around Helena.
