Terrific Day Afield- June 30, 2024

Over sixty species of birds today. Including two Canada Jays (being unmercifully harassed by a pint-sized Western Tanager), a whole slew of Lincoln’s Sparrows, Red-tailed Hawk, and a beautiful Red-naped Sapsucker that stayed still long enough for me to get an image. Lots of time in the field today.

The Priest Pass area was totally alive with birds and butterflies.

The Mini-ridge and Emmett’s trail loop was almost a bust until the last bit when we watched a Western Tanager harass the holy heck out of two Canada Jay’s.

The Canada Jay that I was able to get a picture of looks pretty rough around the edges. If that Western Tanner is responsible for how this Canada Jay looks, I have a whole new respect for Tanagers!
