Lovely In The Scratchgravels

At one point we were totally surrounded by Pinyon Jays. They started calling to each other and then they came in close to see what we were up to. Beautiful birds. This is a species of concern in Montana – we are always very happy to see them – especially in the numbers we saw this morning.

There were easily 30 and possible more like 40 of them. Then a Hairy Woodpecker came in to join the fray. White-breasted and Pygmy Nuthatches were calling as well.

This was also our first 5k trail walk of 2024. Spring seems to be springing in the Helena valley.
