Great Backyard Bird Count – 2024

At one point today we were standing quite still and the Lab and I had over 300 Bohemian Waxwings flying back and forth over our heads. I could clearly hear the wingbeats as dozens swept back and forth only a few feet over my head. That was, perhaps, the most restorative thing to happen today.

The Common Goldeneyes are starting to show some signs of mating- the males are chasing each other away from the females.

There was a Northern Harrier surveying several fields out in the NE valley. We stopped and watched as he transitioned from his slow and low flight pattern to lightening quick barrel-roll pirouettes as he dropped for prey.

Canada Geese calls were all over the valley and Stellar’s Jay and Clark’s Nutcracker calls drown out the Red-breasted nuthatches and Brown Creepers up at the Helena Ridge trailhead. Lots of Mountain and Black-capped Chickadee calling going on out there, too.

It’s almost as if, despite the 12” (30cm) of new snow yesterday, spring is around the corner.
