I went out midday, looking for a short-eared owl that had been cited in the Helena valley. I was unsuccessful at finding the owl.
I did, however, find a porcupine eating the cambium layer of a tree. He was decently far away and refused to cooperate and give me a good view of his face, but you can still tell it’s a porcupine. So that’s kind of cool.
There were at least two other trees in the same area that showed porcupine damage. They can be destructive little buggers! Lots of other raptors out and about on our first day above freezing in a bit more than a week.
