The wildflowers are really starting to pop in the greater Helena area. Today I found and photographed five new species of flowering plant. I didn’t find any new species of birds, but I suspect that that will begin changing quickly. One of the new species that I found today was Lyall‘s Rockcress. My good friend found it first and alerted me to it- so I took a quick walk at lunch, met up with MPC and found the small, beautiful pale purple flower.
The greater Helena area seems to have no fewer than seven species of Rockcress- I’ve now seen three. Not a bad start! I also saw a stunning Nuttall’s Violet (yellow), Prairie Milkvetch, Alpine Bladderpod, and Prairie Smoke.
It was a big day. We logged 6.74 miles of hiking and 21,538 steps. Not a bad day at all!
