Friday morning dawned cool and overcast. So, I walked Obi for a just a bit locally and hit the road. As I came around the bend in the road and caught my first glimpse of the lake, I was disappointed not to see any white geese or swans on the water. The reports from Freezeout Refuge indicated that today was to be the peak day. Then I looked to the east of the road over the grain fields and was amazed tens of thousands of Snow Geese and Tundra Swans were flying in- we were arriving at the same moment that they were. We found a nice spot, walked around, watched and listened. Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks estimates that there were 52,500 white geese and over 1,700 white swans there today. It was so invigorating to see and hear so much life after such a long, cold winter.
