2021 Great Backyard Bird Count

A cold front moved in a few days ago. Enough of a change that we have been relegated to very short walks for the past several days. I was hoping to make a good go of the 2021 Backyard Bird Count. I was planning to spend much of Fri, Sat and Sun out afield, rambling about with the Labrador. But as Rob Watson, founder of the LEED Green Building Rating System is credited with saying, “Mother Nature always bats last….”

Rather than a good bit of time spent outside, we have been bundling up and braving very short “constitutionals” for the Lab the -18 Fahrenheit (-27C) temps and hoping to see, well, anything moving at all. Mid-day temps have been a little better, typically -5F (-15C) or so. But still- not much is moving about. As a result, I have seen a host of the usual suspects- House Finches, Chickadees, Ravens, Magpies, etc.

In addition to the cold- we have a nice blanket of 14 inches of snow that has fallen in the last week. So- no driving off into the wilds for a short bit, either. That’s a bit of Humbug, if you ask me. The local parks and Fairgrounds have been welcoming, but sparse in their species diversity. The only new species we have seen this week are Bohemian Waxwings, a Northern Goshawk, Red Crossbills, and a Cooper’s Hawk.

Oh well, Mother Nature does as she will and we just enjoy the ride as best we can. The spring migration just keep creeping nearer.
