Faint-flare-fade

No image was possible this morning, but I have a theory on what I saw.

I was on my 6:30am walk with the Lab. Looking up into the moonless sky, I saw a large hole in the clouds through which the stars shone brightly. The rest of the sky was occluded by low clouds.

As I was walking and looking up, I noticed a faint light come into existence, then it flared up like a small supernova, then it faded completely away. There was no motion associated with the light- just a point of light that came into existence, grew quite bright, and disappeared over the course of 3-5 seconds.

So, I walked on for a few minutes thinking about what I might have seen and the only reasonable explanation is that I was looking straight on into a meteorite as it entered the atmosphere and burned up. It had the same “timeline” as other meteorites, but with the lack of any up-down-left-right motion, it took me a moment to realize what it was.

Or a tiny little supernova occurred and had the good fortune to see it.
