Fall Migration and Another Reason To Get Outside

Fall in Montana is amazing. A wild ride, yes, but truly amazing. We have new neighbors who moved in across the street about 3 months ago. They asked what Fall was like here and we replied it’s “variable”. This year, October was a little harsh, but November is shaping up to be quite nice.

Late Afternoon walkabout

As I have mentioned many times before- I get out several times every day regardless of the “niceness” of the weather. To be able to make this work and to maintain a full-time job, I have to start early and end late. We are usually out the door for the first walk of the day at 5:15 to 5:30am. The last outing can be as “late” as 7pm in the winter, or 9pm in the summer. Obsidian Black Dog tends to put himself to bed about 7:30pm year round.

The beauty of this sort of schedule is that I get to see nature in all its glory in a nice variety of places. We choose where to go based on the conditions. If we get 20 inches of snow, I tend to walk the neighborhood. A few inches, and I tend to hit a nice park about two miles away that has a mile long loop that is paved. Otherwise, it’s the local mountain paths, prairie trails around the valley, etc.

I was walking along a nice open path a few days ago and an old Colin Hay song popped up in my mind – “I watch the sun as it comes up I watch it as it sets, Yeah this is as good as it gets” – and I thought to myself, he’s right- “My, my, my it’s a beautiful world”.

Poor image, but, the moon, Saturn and Jupiter were just too nice to ignore. Evening ramble with the Lab

We can sit inside, or we can get outside and enjoy the world as it is.

I choose to get outside.
