Today, the day before Father’s Day, we went to Benton Lake. We started our day at the Fairgrounds so Obi could run some energy off and then we went to Benton Lake NWR. On the way home from Benton Lake we stopped at First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park and did a little more walking.
Overall the birding was incredible! I am writing this blog post as I sit on the deck at 7pm on June 20, 2020. It is the longest day of the year and we have 79 species of birds positively identified today. Not a bad way to spend the Solstice.
We picked up at least one life bird and several year birds. The life bird was a McCown’s Longspur- a bird that is now being considered for a new, less controversial name.
When we left home, our goal was to try to see Terns, Burrowing Owls, Short-eared Owls and Long-billed Curlews.
We were successful on all counts.
We also saw three Black-crowned Night Herons, a Badger and Obsidian was dive bombed by a Willet.
