A Little Coastal Nature

What a nice day! First full day in Brookings, Oregon. We took the morning and went for a hike in Alfred Loeb Park- the Northern most Redwood grove in the country. These are not huge trees like those found in California, but they were pretty amazing. We did a nice little loop trail that was a bit more than a mile in length and had a decent elevation gain. We saw Stellar’s Jays, Varied Thrushes and heard a couple of species we could not ID.

We hit the shore in several places. Harris Beach, McVay Rock, and finally Pelican Beach. The first two are in Oregon, the last one in California. I’ve now lead the girls into Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Michigan, and California. We now have Nevada surrounded. Eleven states in the last five years. That feels good. On the beach today we saw Western, California and Glaucous Gulls, Pelagic Cormorant, Black Turnstones, Black Oystercatcher, Caspian Tern, and Black Scoter.

Out the window of our house, we saw a Hermit Thrush, Bald Eagle, Great Blue Heron, Eurasian Collard Dove, a grillion Gulls, Tree Swallows, White Crowned Sparrows and a Double Crested Cormorant.

On my final evening walk, I saw Hooded and Common Mergansers, heard an unidentified species of bird and frogs and saw a beautiful River Otter playing on the shoreline of the river near our house.

Eight new year birds, and six new life birds.

A really nice day!
