The Holiday break was a good one. We took a quick trip to Great Falls in hope of seeing a Yellow Billed Loon that had been hanging out near Giant Springs State Park. We knew we had a very short window of opportunity as there had been a decent amount of snow already and a significant snow event was forecast for later in the day. So, 8am and out the door. At 9:30, she swam up to us and paraded back and forth for a good 10 minutes. Which was all we could tolerate. The air temp was -2, there was a slight breeze and we were standing where the Giant Spring empties into the Missouri River. It was crazy humid and quite cold. When we got back to the van, we realized that our legs were sore from the cold. Didn’t matter a whit- we had a private audience with the Loon! Most of the time we spent with her, she was less than 15 feet away! Nature every day- even when it’s frigid!
